Where each Lenovo series sits on price and use
A $1,000 budget can buy a ThinkPad E, a mid-range IdeaPad, an entry Yoga or a LOQ gaming laptop. They are very different machines, so decide on use first.
How to decode Lenovo model names
Lenovo names look random until you know the pattern. Most names follow the same order: series, style, tier, chip letter, then generation.
| In the name | What it means | 2026 example |
|---|---|---|
| i | Intel chip | Legion 5i, IdeaPad Pro 5i, Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura |
| a | AMD chip | Legion 5a, Legion 7a, Yoga 7a 2-in-1, IdeaPad 5a 2-in-1 |
| x | Qualcomm Snapdragon (Arm) chip | Yoga Slim 7x Gen 11, IdeaPad Slim 5x 15 |
| 3, 5, 7, 9 | Tier inside a family. Higher usually means a better screen, build and price | IdeaPad Slim 3, IdeaPad Slim 5x, Yoga Pro 9i |
| 14, 15, 16 | Screen size in inches | ThinkPad T14, ThinkPad T16, ThinkBook 16 |
| s | Slimmer, lighter version | ThinkPad T14s Gen 7 (about 1.1 kg) |
| Gen + number | Generation. Each line counts on its own | T14 Gen 7 and X1 Carbon Gen 14 are both 2026 models |
| Aura Edition | Lenovo’s premium tag. Every Aura model in this guide uses an Intel Core Ultra chip | X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition, Yoga Pro 9i Aura |
| Pro | More power and usually a bigger, sharper screen | IdeaPad Pro 5i, Yoga Pro 7i Aura, Legion Pro 7i |
Snapdragon (“x”) laptops run Windows on Arm, so check that your must-have apps and games run on Arm before you buy.
ThinkPad vs ThinkBook: which business laptop?
Both are business laptops, but they sit at different prices. Lenovo’s US store lists the ThinkBook 14 and 16 (Gen 7 and Gen 8) from $578.76 to $679. ThinkPad starts around $890 for the E14 Gen 7 and climbs past $2,139 for the X1 Carbon Gen 14.
At the bottom the gap is small. Notebookcheck says the ThinkPad E has a build “more like a Lenovo ThinkBook”, so between those two, buy the better spec for the money. The real ThinkPad difference starts higher up: vPro options on the L14 Gen 7 and X1 Carbon, MIL-STD-810H testing that Lenovo cites for the X1 Carbon Gen 14, and up to 5 years of Premier Support on the X1.
ThinkPad
- One family from student (E) to engineer (P)
- vPro options for IT-managed fleets
- X1 Carbon Gen 14 weighs 2.15 lb and scored 89.9% at Notebookcheck
- Premier Support up to 5 years on X1
- T and X1 models cost a lot more than a ThinkBook
- List prices are often far above sale prices
- The AMD E14 Gen 7 uses older Zen 4 chips; Notebookcheck calls AMD “the worse choice” in that model
ThinkBook
- The cheapest Lenovo business laptops, from about $579
- Fine for email, office apps and browsing
- ThinkBook Plus models try new ideas, like the Auto Twist screen
- The toughness claims we found (MIL-STD-810H) are for ThinkPad X1, not ThinkBook
- If IT needs vPro, check the exact ThinkBook spec sheet
- Plus models jump to $1,649, which is ThinkPad money
The ThinkPad lines: E, L, T, X1 and P
Inside ThinkPad, the letter matters more than the brand.
| Line | Who it’s for | 2026 model to look at | Price seen in 2026 | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E | Students, small business | E14 Gen 7 (Intel Core 5 to Ultra 7, or AMD Ryzen 3 210 to 7 250) | About $890 | Notebookcheck 85%. 12-month warranty on the spec sheet |
| L | Company fleets on a budget | L14 Gen 7 (Intel Core Ultra Series 3, vPro options) | $1,559 list, $1,109 at 28% off | The Gen 6 launched at $1,209 |
| T | Most office workers | T14 Gen 7, T16 Gen 5, T14s Gen 7 (adds Snapdragon X2) | T14s from €1,700 in Europe | T14 Gen 7 ran 18.1 h on Wi-Fi; the older T14 Gen 6 ran 19.4 h |
| X1 | Executives, frequent flyers | X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition | $2,139 to $2,249 | 2.15 lb, “almost 24 hours” of battery (Notebookcheck) |
| P | Engineers, CAD, 3D work | P1 Gen 8 (Core Ultra 7 255H, RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell) | About $2,000 | Notebookcheck 91.6%, PCMag 80% |
Legion vs LOQ: which Lenovo gaming laptop?
LOQ is the budget gaming line and Legion the premium one. The 2026 LOQ 15AHP11 costs about $1,149 with a Ryzen 7 250 and an RTX 5050 or 5060. The Legion 5 starts around $1,300 to $1,550, depending on source and model. TechCabal’s 2026 comparison shows what the extra money buys:
- Screen: Legion mostly uses OLED (100% DCI-P3, 500 nits, 165 to 240Hz). LOQ uses IPS (400 nits, sRGB, up to 180Hz).
- Battery and Wi-Fi: Legion 5 has an 80Wh battery and Wi-Fi 7. LOQ has 60Wh and Wi-Fi 6.
- Weight: the Legion 5 15 is about 1.9 kg. The LOQ is about 2.2 kg.
- Cooling: Legion uses Lenovo’s “Coldfront” system, LOQ uses “Hyperchamber”.
Legion
- OLED screens, bigger battery, Wi-Fi 7
- The Legion Pro 7i Gen 11 set a new gaming performance record in Jarrod’sTech’s testing
- Top models get very expensive: the Pro 7i Gen 11 with RTX 5080 is about $5,578
- The Legion 9i Gen 10 (18-inch) starts at $3,920
LOQ
- RTX 50-series gaming for about $1,149
- Up to 180Hz screen, fine for most games
- Notebookcheck score of 81%
- Fan noise and weak speakers (Notebookcheck)
- SSD throttling under load and no card reader
IdeaPad vs Yoga: everyday or premium?
IdeaPad is Lenovo’s mainstream home line. Yoga is the premium line, and it gets the Aura Editions, OLED screens and top build. At CES 2026 the gap at the entry point was small: the IdeaPad Slim 5x 15 started at $899 and the Yoga Slim 7x Gen 11 at $949.99, both with Snapdragon X2 chips. The Slim 7x then lasted 19 hours 25 minutes in Tom’s Hardware’s battery test.
Higher up, the IdeaPad Pro 5i 16 started at $1,699 and the Yoga Pro 7i Aura 15 at $1,799.99. When the gap is only $50 to $100, the Yoga is usually worth it. When an IdeaPad is on deep sale, like the Slim 3 15 Gen 11 at $699.99 versus $1,299.99 list, the IdeaPad wins on value.
IdeaPad
- From about $799 at launch prices
- Intel, AMD and Snapdragon options
- Frequent deep discounts
- List prices can be far above real selling prices
- No Aura Editions; fewer OLED and premium options
Yoga
- Long battery life on the Slim 7x (19 h 25 min, Tom’s Hardware)
- OLED and Aura Edition models
- 2-in-1 options like the Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Gen 10 (from $1,549)
- Creator models run up to $1,899.99 and more
- The dual-screen Yoga Book 9i ($1,709.99) is a niche buy
Windows 10 support has ended: does it change what to buy?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025. Home users can still get Extended Security Updates until 12 October 2027. Microsoft offers them free if you sync with Windows Backup, for 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or for $30. Microsoft 365 apps on Windows 10 keep getting security updates until 10 October 2028.
So if your old laptop still works, there is no need to panic-buy. Sign up for ESU, then wait for a sale. If it can’t run Windows 11, plan to replace it before 12 October 2027.
How to pay less at Lenovo in 2026
- Time it. Black Friday is Friday 27 November 2026 (Thanksgiving is 26 November) and Cyber Monday is 30 November.
- Look in the basket, not for a code. There is no universal Lenovo code; weekly eCoupons and sale prices apply in the basket. If a code from another site fails, here is why.
- Use the education store. Students and teachers verify with ID.me in the cart. Sources quote 5% to 10% or more, so check the current figure on Lenovo’s discount programs page.
- Join Lenovo Pro if you buy for work. It is free. Tiers give up to 5% extra off Think products (Pro), 8% (Plus) or 10% (Elite, after $50K spend), plus 45-day returns, free expedited delivery and a free 1-year warranty upgrade.
- Collect My Lenovo Rewards. Lenovo says members get up to 9% back. The Lenovo Pro page says 3% on most purchases and up to 9% on promotions. Points expire 6 months after they are issued.
- Know the return windows. 30 days on lenovo.com, 14 days at the Outlet and 45 days for Lenovo Pro, with a free return label and no restocking fee (Tom’s Hardware, PC Gamer). Standard shipping is free with no minimum.
- Try the Outlet. Refurbished and clearance stock is cheaper, but returns are shorter and price matching is reported not to apply.
- Ask about price match and price drops. Lenovo runs a price-match / price-drop policy in the US; check the current terms. Deal sites such as dealnews say Lenovo may match a comparable Lenovo, HP or Dell PC with the same key specs from a major online retailer if you ask before buying, and may refund the difference if lenovo.com’s own price drops within 30 days of your invoice. Promo prices, refurbished items and custom builds are reported as excluded.
- Consider last year’s model. The X1 Carbon Gen 13 Aura is still sold at a discount, the Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 was $3,199 on Amazon, and the T14 Gen 6 beat the Gen 7 on battery in Notebookcheck’s test.

Frequently asked questions
Is ThinkPad better than ThinkBook?
ThinkPad is the more premium business line, with vPro options, MIL-STD-810H testing cited for the X1 Carbon and long support plans. ThinkBook is cheaper, from about $579 in 2026, and is fine for everyday office work. The entry ThinkPad E is close to a ThinkBook in build, so the big difference starts at the T series.
Is Legion or LOQ better for gaming?
Legion is better: it has OLED screens on most models, an 80Wh battery and Wi-Fi 7. LOQ is the value pick at about $1,149 with an RTX 5050 or 5060, but it is louder and heavier. Buy LOQ if budget comes first and Legion if you want the better screen and build.
What do i, a and x mean in Lenovo laptop names?
They tell you the chip maker: i is Intel, a is AMD and x is Qualcomm Snapdragon. For example, the Legion 5i uses Intel, the Legion 5a uses AMD and the Yoga Slim 7x uses Snapdragon.
Is a Yoga worth it over an IdeaPad?
Usually yes when the price gap is small. At CES 2026 the Yoga Slim 7x Gen 11 started at $949.99 versus $899 for the IdeaPad Slim 5x 15. If an IdeaPad is on a deep sale, the IdeaPad is the better value.
When is the best time to buy a Lenovo laptop in 2026?
Black Friday (27 November 2026) and Cyber Monday (30 November 2026) are the main sale dates. Lenovo also runs weekly eCoupons in the basket, so check prices before and after those dates.
Does Lenovo price match?
Lenovo runs a price-match and price-drop policy in the US. Deal sites report that it can match comparable Lenovo, HP or Dell PCs from major retailers before you buy, and refund the difference if lenovo.com’s price drops within 30 days of your invoice. Check Lenovo’s current terms before you rely on it.
