Most coupon sites measure success by how many codes they list. We measure it by how many work. The difference matters because a failed code at checkout costs you time and, often, the discount you would have got another way. This guide explains why codes fail, how we label offers so you know what you are clicking, and what to check before you buy.
Key takeaways
- Most codes fail for one of nine reasons: expired, wrong country, new customers only, minimum spend not met, excluded items, one code per order, leaked private codes, app-only codes or a typo.
- Before you pay, read the conditions line (region, minimum, new-customer rule, end date) and check that the total drops in the basket.
- If a store already has a sale or member price, the code may not stack. Take the bigger saving.
- Every offer on Spicy Coupons is labelled as a Deal, Members offer or Code, with its source and conditions.
Nine reasons a code fails at checkout
- It expired. The most common reason. Many sites keep codes online for years after the campaign ended.
- Wrong region. Codes are usually issued per country or currency. A code for the Polish site will not work on the US one.
- New customers only. First-order codes check your email, address and sometimes your device. An existing account blocks them.
- Minimum order not met. “10% off” often means “10% off orders over a threshold”, before shipping.
- Excluded items. Sale items, gift cards, certain brands and marketplace sellers are frequently excluded.
- One code per order. If a member discount or a sale price already applies, the code may be rejected or do nothing extra.
- It was never meant for you. Influencer, employee, student or single-use codes get copied around. Retailers cancel them when they leak.
- App or channel only. Some codes only work in the retailer’s app, or only on the mobile site.
- Typing. Codes can be case-sensitive, and the letter O and the number 0 look alike. Copy and paste instead of typing.
How we label offers
Every offer on Spicy Coupons carries one of three labels, so you know what you are getting before you click:
- Deal: a saving that applies without a code: a sale, free delivery over a threshold, free returns, a bundle price. Click through and the price you see is the price.
- Members or loyalty: a saving you get by signing in or joining a free programme, such as Trip Coins at Trip.com or Smart! at Allegro.
- Code: a discount code released by the store or its affiliate network, listed with its source and the date we added it. We print the conditions next to it and the date we last checked it.
We do not publish codes that were not released for publication, and we do not show “verified” badges on offers we have not tested. How we check offers is described on How we verify.
A 30-second check before you buy
- Read the conditions line. Region, minimum order, new-customer rule, end date. If one of them does not fit you, the code will fail.
- Look at the review date. Our store pages show when the offer was last checked. The older the date, the more likely something changed.
- Compare with the deal. If the store already has a sale or member price, a code may not stack. Take the bigger one.
- Apply before paying. Enter the code in the basket, confirm the total drops, then pay. Never pay first and hope for a refund.
When a code fails anyway
- Check the member or app price: at many stores it is bigger than any public code.
- Use loyalty currency you already have: coins, miles, points.
- Check the sale calendar on the store page; big events often beat codes by a wide margin.
- Tell us which store and which offer. We re-check it and mark it as expired if it no longer works.
For the mechanics of entering a code at each store, see How to use a coupon. For current offers, start at All stores.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a coupon code say it is invalid?
Usually because it has expired, is for another country, is limited to new customers, or your basket is below the minimum spend. Check the conditions line next to the code first.
Can I use two coupon codes on one order?
Most stores accept one code per order, and many codes do not stack with sale or member prices. If both apply, use whichever saves more.
What should I do if a code from Spicy Coupons does not work?
Check the member or app price and any loyalty points you have, then tell us through the contact page. We re-check the offer and mark it as expired if it no longer works.
