📹 Security cameras without a subscription in 2026: what Ring, Arlo, Nest, Blink, Wyze, Eufy, Tapo and Reolink really cost

Last checked: 16 October 2026 · US prices, before tax · Spicy Coupons editorial team

THE SHORT ANSWER

In 2026, every big camera brand still gives you live view and motion alerts for free. The real split is saved video: Ring, Google Nest, Blink and Arlo keep recordings (and most smart detection) behind a plan, while Reolink, Eufy, Tapo and Wyze can record to a microSD card or a home hub with no fee.

For 3 cameras, cloud plans cost roughly $70 to $216 a year, or about $350 to $1,080 over 5 years. Reolink is our best overall pick if you never want to pay a fee. A plan is still worth it if you need off-site backup or professional monitoring.

The short version

  • Free everywhere: live view and motion alerts on all 8 brands below.
  • Free saved video: Reolink, Eufy, Tapo and Wyze (local card or hub). Not Ring. Only a few hours on Google Nest.
  • Free person detection: Reolink and Eufy, plus some newer Tapo models.
  • Prices went up: Arlo (January 2025), Blink (October 2025) and Wyze Cam Plus yearly (March 2026).
  • Local only has one big weakness: if a thief takes the camera or the card, the video goes too.

Which security cameras work without a subscription in 2026?

All of them let you open the app and watch. The question is what gets saved when you are not looking. Here is what each brand gives you with no plan, and its cheapest plan.

How we compared: we read each brand’s own plan and support pages on 16 October 2026 (Ring, Google, Blink, Wyze, Eufy, TP-Link Tapo and Reolink). Arlo’s plans page would not load, so Arlo prices come from HomeCamCafe (September 2026) and Arlo’s own community post on the 2025 price rise. “Free” means what works with no paid plan at all. Features differ by model, so check your exact camera before you buy.
Scorecard of free features with no plan: all 8 brands give free live view and alerts; Reolink and Eufy also give free saved video, person detection and local storage; Ring gives no free recordings or local storage

What each brand gives you free, and what it keeps for subscribers

Ring

Ring’s own blog (July 2026) lists what stays free: Live View, real-time motion alerts, two-way talk, motion zones and viewing on Alexa. No video is saved, and person detection needs a plan. Plans are now Solo ($49.99/yr, one device), Multi ($99.99/yr, all devices at one home) and Pro ($199.99/yr, adds 24/7 professional monitoring), with up to 180 days of video. Ring Edge local storage still needs a subscription.

Arlo

Free users get live view, two-way audio and basic motion alerts, but no cloud history (about 7 days on some older models). Local recording needs a SmartHub or base station with a USB drive or microSD card. Secure Plus is $9.99 a month for one camera or $19.99 for unlimited, less if billed yearly. We could not load Arlo’s plans page, so check the current price.

Google Nest

Nest Aware became Google Home Premium on 1 October 2025, at the same prices. Standard is $100 a year (30 days of events) and Advanced is $200 a year (60 days of events plus 10 days of 24/7 video). One plan covers every Nest device in your home. With no plan, most models keep 3 hours of events and the newest wired ones up to 6 hours of previews.

Blink

Free users get Live View and motion alerts. Cloud video (up to 60 days) and person and vehicle detection need a plan: Basic is $39.99 a year for one device, Plus $119.99 for all. The free route is a Sync Module 2 with a USB drive up to 256GB. It saves clips only when you have no plan, skips the older XT and XT2, and the clips are not encrypted.

Wyze

Wyze cameras are cheap and record to microSD. The Cam v4 takes cards up to 512GB and can record 24/7. Without Cam Plus, the cloud Events tab shows thumbnails instead of clips. Cam Plus is $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year per camera, and Wyze suggests Cam Unlimited ($9.99 a month) from three cameras up.

TP-Link Tapo

TP-Link says plainly: “Your Tapo camera works without a subscription.” Most models record to microSD up to 512GB, and newer ones such as the RoomCam 360 detect people, pets and vehicles with no plan. The renamed plans are Cloud ($34.99/yr, up to 2 devices, 30 days), Cloud Advanced ($119.99/yr, unlimited, 180 days) and Cloud Advanced AI ($199.99/yr).

Eufy

Eufy’s pitch is “No monthly fee”. Human, pet and motion detection run on the device. The HomeBase S380 can hold “up to 1 year” of video on a drive of up to 16TB (sold separately). Cloud backup is optional, from $39.99 a year for one device. Notification thumbnails do pass through Eufy’s cloud.

Reolink

Reolink says local storage on microSD, NVR, NAS or FTP is free and its cloud is “not compulsory but optional”. Person, vehicle and animal detection run on the camera. Image alerts are free up to 25 a day; animated GIF alerts are paid. The Argus 4 Pro, E1 Outdoor Pro and TrackMix Wi-Fi take microSD cards up to 512GB. The Home Hub links up to 8 cameras and comes with a 64GB card. It was $99.99 at launch (PCWorld, January 2025), so check the current price.

Also worth knowing: SimpliSafe saves nothing without a plan (SafeWise, May 2026). Swann keeps 1 to 7 days of cloud clips free. Lorex NVR systems record 24/7 to a hard drive with “no monthly fees”.

What 3 cameras really cost over 5 years

Here is the plan cost only, for a typical home with 3 cameras, using the cheapest plan or mix of plans that covers all three. These are estimates based on US prices as of October 2026. Prices have gone up several times since 2025, so the real 5-year total may be higher. Camera prices are not included.

BrandPlan for 3 camerasPer year5 years (estimate)No-plan option
ArloSecure Plus unlimited, yearly: $17.99 x 12$215.88$215.88 x 5 = $1,079.40Local via hub
BlinkPlus (all devices)$119.99$119.99 x 5 = $599.95USB, newer models
Eufy3 x Basic at $39.99$119.97$119.97 x 5 = $599.85$0, local
Google NestHome Premium Standard (whole home)$100.00$100 x 5 = $500.003 to 6 hours only
RingMulti (all devices, one home)$99.99$99.99 x 5 = $499.95Live view only
Wyze3 x Cam Plus at $29.99$89.97$89.97 x 5 = $449.85$0, microSD
ReolinkOptional Standard cloud: $6.99 x 12 (Reolink’s blog, 5 cameras)$83.88$83.88 x 5 = $419.40$0, local
Tapo2 x Cloud at $34.99 (each covers 2 devices)$69.98$69.98 x 5 = $349.90$0, microSD

Two notes on the maths. For Tapo, if your account will not take two Cloud plans, Cloud Advanced costs $119.99 a year ($599.95 over 5 years). For Ring, three Solo plans would cost $149.97 a year, so Multi is the cheaper choice from two cameras up.

Bar chart of yearly cloud plan cost for 3 cameras: Arlo $215.88, Blink $119.99, Eufy $119.97, Google Nest $100, Ring $99.99, Wyze $89.97, Reolink $83.88 optional, Tapo $69.98
Yearly plan cost for 3 cameras, US prices as of October 2026. Estimates; Arlo prices are from a secondary source.

The no-plan route is not quite free either: you need a microSD card per camera, or a hub or NVR with a drive. That is a one-off cost, and prices vary.

Camera plan price rises since 2025

  1. Arlo, 3 January 2025: Secure Plus monthly went from $7.99 to $9.99 (one camera) and from $17.99 to $19.99 (unlimited).
  2. Blink, 8 October 2025: Basic from $30 to $39.99 a year, Plus from $100 to $119.99 a year, at your first renewal after that date.
  3. Google, 1 October 2025: Nest Aware renamed Google Home Premium. Prices did not change.
  4. Wyze, 2 March 2026: Cam Plus yearly from $19.99 to $29.99 per camera at renewal.
  5. Ring and Tapo: both renamed their plans. We could not confirm the date of Ring’s change or any price rise for Ring, Eufy, Tapo or Reolink.

Best picks for no-subscription home security

Best overall, no subscriptionReolink

Free local recording, free person, vehicle and animal detection, and the widest choice of storage: card, Home Hub, NVR, NAS or FTP. The free alerts are image-only and capped at 25 a day.

Best for battery cameras with a baseEufy

On-device AI and a HomeBase S380 that can keep up to a year of video. A good fit if you want a tidy, wire-free setup. Thumbnails still pass through the cloud.

Best budgetTapo

Cheap cameras with microSD up to 512GB, and free person detection on newer models. The Cloud plan is the cheapest we found if you want backup later.

Cheapest cloud add-onWyze

Records 24/7 to a card on the Cam v4. If you want cloud clips for one camera, Cam Plus is $29.99 a year.

When a subscription is worth itRing or Google Nest

If you already live in Alexa or Google Home, or want 24/7 professional monitoring (Ring Pro), the plan is the product. Budget about $100 a year for a whole home.

Good about going plan-free
  • $0 a year on Reolink, Eufy, Tapo and Wyze
  • Video stays in your home
  • No price rises at renewal
Not so good
  • A stolen camera or card takes the video with it
  • Fewer smart search features
  • You manage cards and drives yourself

Is a camera subscription ever worth it?

Yes, in three cases. First, when video must survive a break-in: a cloud copy is safe even if someone rips the camera off the wall. Second, when you want someone else watching: Ring Pro adds 24/7 professional monitoring. Third, when you rely on smart search, such as Gemini search of camera history on Google’s Advanced plan. Otherwise, local storage does the job.

Decision flow: if video must survive theft or you want pro monitoring, a plan is worth it; if you already own Ring, Nest, Arlo or Blink, plan or live view only; if you want free person detection, pick Reolink or Eufy; otherwise Tapo or Wyze with a microSD card
A quick way to decide whether you need a plan.

Privacy and local storage: what to know

  • Local means the video stays home, but not that the camera never talks to the cloud. Eufy, for example, sends notification thumbnails through its cloud.
  • Encryption varies. Blink’s USB clips are not encrypted and have no backup, so keep the Sync Module somewhere safe.
  • Hide the recorder. Put the hub, NVR or base station out of sight, so a burglar cannot walk off with the evidence.
  • Lock the account. Use a long, unique password and turn on two-step login. Most camera hacks start with a reused password or a fake login email, the kind we cover in our guide to AI scams.
  • Keep firmware updated and remove old cameras from your account when you sell them.

How to set up local recording

  1. Check the limit. Look up the largest microSD card your model takes (512GB on many Reolink, Tapo and Wyze models, 128GB on some Eufy indoor cams).
  2. Buy a high-endurance card, as cameras write all day.
  3. Format it in the camera app, not on your computer.
  4. Choose motion or 24/7 recording. Battery cameras usually record on motion only.
  5. Set detection zones and person alerts so passing cars do not wake you.
  6. Turn on overwrite so the oldest footage is deleted when the card fills up.
  7. Add a hub or NVR for more cameras. It keeps the video away from the camera itself.
  8. Test playback from outside your home Wi-Fi, and save any important clip to your phone straight away.

Frequently asked questions

Which security cameras have no monthly fee?

Reolink, Eufy, Tapo and Wyze can all record to a microSD card or home hub with no plan. Reolink and Eufy also include person detection for free. Ring, Google Nest, Blink and Arlo work without a plan, but keep saved video mostly behind one.

Can I use a Ring camera without a subscription?

Yes, but only for Live View, motion alerts, two-way talk and motion zones. Ring does not save any video without a plan, and even Ring Edge local storage needs a subscription. The cheapest plan, Ring Solo, is $49.99 a year for one device.

What is the cheapest security camera subscription in 2026?

For one camera, Wyze Cam Plus at $29.99 a year is the cheapest we found. For two cameras, Tapo Cloud at $34.99 a year covers up to 2 devices. For a whole home, Ring Multi ($99.99) and Google Home Premium Standard ($100) cover every device at one address.

Does Google Nest record without Nest Aware?

Only briefly. Without Google Home Premium (the new name for Nest Aware), most Nest cameras keep about 3 hours of event history, and the newest wired models keep up to 6 hours of previews. There is no 24/7 recording without the Advanced plan.

Is local storage safer than cloud storage?

It is more private, because the video stays in your home and is not on a company’s servers. But it is less safe against theft, because a burglar can take the camera or card. A hub or NVR hidden indoors fixes most of that risk.

Do Reolink coupon codes work outside the US?

The codes on this page are for Reolink’s US store. Other countries have their own Reolink stores, prices and codes, so check the total at checkout before you pay.
