🇪🇸 How not to get pickpocketed in Barcelona: the areas to watch and what to do (+ Trip.com codes)

🌐 English · Español

Barcelona has Gaudí, tapas, the beach, and some of the most talented pickpockets in Europe. They don’t look like movie villains. They look like tourists, students and very helpful strangers. The good news: they want an easy target, and a few small habits make you a boring one.

The short version

  • Hotspots: La Rambla, the metro (L1 and L3), Sagrada Família, Barceloneta beach, the Gothic Quarter terraces and Plaça de Catalunya.
  • Backpack on your front, phone in a front pocket, never on the café table.
  • Anyone who suddenly needs your attention (a stain, a petition, a ‘lost’ map) may want your pockets more.
  • Got robbed? Block your cards, then file a police report (denuncia) before you leave Spain. Emergencies: 112.

The 6 places to keep your hand on your bag

1. La Rambla and La Boqueria

THE TRICK

A bump, a ‘sorry!’, and your phone leaves with someone who is very good at apologising.

YOUR MOVE

Phone in a front pocket, bag zipped and in front. Eat the jamón, not the drama.

The city's most famous boulevard is also its busiest office for pickpockets. Inside La Boqueria market, open backpacks are the favourite.

2. Metro lines L1 and L3

THE TRICK

A small crowd blocks the doors, someone ‘loses balance’, the doors close, and so does your wallet's story.

YOUR MOVE

Backpack on your front, stand away from the doors, and if a group crowds you, step off and wait for the next train.

The classic: the group steps off just before the doors close. You stay on, minus a wallet.

3. Sagrada Família

THE TRICK

You look up at the towers. Someone else looks down at your open bag.

YOUR MOVE

Everyone looks up, and that's the perfect moment for someone to look into your bag.

4. Barceloneta beach

You swim. Your phone ‘goes for a walk’ without you.

YOUR MOVE

Bring only what you need, swim in shifts, and keep valuables in a waterproof pouch on you.

The sea is great. Leaving your phone and wallet on a towel while you swim is not.

5. Gothic Quarter and El Born

The terrace move: a map or a menu placed on your table, lifted a second later with your phone underneath.

6. Plaça de Catalunya

THE TRICK

A clipboard petition or a ‘lost’ tourist with a map. You lean in, a partner leans into your pockets.

YOUR MOVE

Smile, say ‘no, gracias’ and keep walking. You don't owe anyone a signature.

Petitions, fake charities and ‘lost’ tourists. Here, being helpful gets expensive.

The tricks to know

  • The stain: someone points at ‘bird poop’ on your jacket and kindly helps clean it. The helper’s partner cleans out your bag.
  • The fake cop: a ‘plain-clothes officer’ asks to check your wallet for fake money. Say no, and head for a busy place.
  • The terrace grab: a phone on a café table is a gift. Don’t give gifts.
  • The scooter snatch: using your phone at the edge of the pavement? Someone on a bike or scooter may take it on the way past. Step back from the road.

Before you go: the 5-minute checklist

  • ☐  Write down your phone’s IMEI and serial number (dial *#06#). The police and lost property office ask for it.
  • ☐  Leave your passport in the hotel safe and carry a photo of it.
  • ☐  Take one card out with you and leave a backup card at the hotel.
  • ☐  Turn on Find My / Find My Device and a screen lock.
  • ☐  Get an eSIM before you fly, so you have data and maps from the moment you land. Saily lists code Indoleads for 5% off (get Saily).

If it happens anyway

  • Block your cards in your banking app first. Then log out of your accounts from another device.
  • File a denuncia (police report) with the Mossos d’Esquadra before you leave Spain. Your insurance will want it. The main station is at Carrer Nou de la Rambla 76–80.
  • Emergencies: 112. Lost property: 010.
  • Lost your passport? Contact your embassy or consulate for an emergency travel document.
